The Wonder-Vitamin D

By: Kathleen Rouse

Vitamin D - yes, we all know it builds strong and healthy teeth and bones but did you also know it:

  • keeps you trim,
  • boosts your mood,
  • wards off sniffles and
  • drastically cuts your risk of cancer.

What are some other sources of Vitamin D besides milk?  Try salmon and learn about these other sources.

The National Osteoperosis Foundation recommends 400-800 IU of Vitamin D daily for adults 50 and under and 800 IU for adults 50 and older.

So how do you get more Vitamin D in your diet?  Dairy products are a great source of vitamin D.  However, if you’re lactose intolerant or just want something new, here’s some other good sources:

  • Salmon (360 IU)
  • Sardines (250 IU)
  • Tuna (200 IU)
  • Dietary Supplements
  • Getting out and enjoying some rays.  Exposure to the sun causes the skin to synthesize Vitamin D, as little as 5-10 minutes of sun a day is sufficient.
