Fellow Global Mama

By: Kathleen Rouse

It is rare to meet a kindred spirit.  Let alone on another continent!  That’s why it was so special to meet and still correspond with Julia Blaukopf, a fellow Global Mama while volunteering in Ghana, West Africa.  Julia Blaukopf is an award-winning photographer for her international photographic work with non-profits, ethical businesses, and visual essays.

In 2005 Blaukopf  worked with a community-run tree reforestation project in Kenya.  A year later she traveled to Ghana for five months to photograph for Women in Progress, a non-profit group that empowers women of the community through a sustainable business of clothing manufacturing. Her images of intimate moments between families, strangers in the city and local workers are aimed at creating an alternative documentary.  The photographs have exhibited nationally and Julia has received many honors and awards for her international work.

As an artist, Julia’s job is to relay stories.  She places importance on continued collaboration with the global community. She listsens to local stories and shares them through photographs, collage, and books.  I explore the concept of printing large scale on textured surfaces for display in both gallery settings, outdoor installations, as well as offices, homes, hospitals, schools, and so forth.  Julia’s vision is of printed and public art, a means in which images are accessible to everyone.

Julia uses her passion as an artist to raise awareness and foster a mutual understanding between communities on an international level. She does this by working as a creative partner with non-profits, ethically-minded businesses, media outlets, and educational institutions.

Please contact Julia Blaukopf for further information on a project, for purchase, or to commission the artist for your business, schools, hospitals, and homes.
