Global Mamas: Charity? No.

By: Kathleen Rouse

It may sound counterintuitive to some but many of the world’s poorest people are a good credit risk. A lifetime of struggling just for food and shelter fosters the kind of single-minded drive that it takes to start or build a small business. Rather than being merely victims, the world’s poor are the key to their own emergence from poverty. Given a working chance - just a start - they can begin to build their own future.

Charity? No.

I’ll admit, I’m a bleeding heart if there ever was one.  However I’m getting tired of the many charities to simply give, give, give people food for a day rather than giving them the tools and know-how to feed themselves.  When looking for a volunteering opportunity local or overseas I needed to know that I was contributing to sustainable, lasting impact and not just giving charity.  The cooperative of women business owners that makes up Global Mamas is and continues to be an inspiration.
